Rio Blanco Fire

Shawn and I work closely with the Pagosa and Columbine San Juan National Forest Wildland Fire teams. First, we provided fire weather training in the spring. In addition, we have been answering the questions and concerns from the team management this summer. They have been walking a fine line all summer with grave concerns about the fuel conditions due to the dry weather.

We felt we had dodged a bullet. Unfortunately…

The Rio Blanco fire was reported on July 28th and quickly grew. It burned south of Eightmile Mesa, approximately 12 miles south of Pagosa Springs on Valle Seco B Road. The fire was started by lightning at about 3pm. Nearby neighborhoods, on the Lower Blanco were evacuated with very short notice.

Our local Pagosa District USFS Wildland fire team with assistance from local fire departments and the Sheriff’s office took initial command. A San Juan Type 3 Incident Management Team was able to relocate from another fire to Pagosa Springs to assume management of the fire the next day. Shawn and I attended a few of their early morning briefs. We were very impressed with the professionalism and expertise of these dedicated professional fire crews.

The Rio Blanco Fire’s final mapped size was 1,388 acres on August 5th, when it was reported to be 55 percent contained. Pre-evacuation orders were lifted on August 5th and 6th with mandatory evacuation orders lifted the afternoon on Friday, August 7th, allowing residents along County Road 335 to return home after more than a week.

The fire was declared 100% contained on August 18th. No structures were damaged or lost.

Our thoughts are with those who were displaced, our Pagosa neighbors, as they settle back into their homes. We are so thankful to everyone in the community that rallied to help the firefighters and our neighbors who have evacuated their homes. We love where we live!

As always, we are so thankful to all the firefighter teams, those local and those from around the country.

Morning brief at Cloman Park. Firefighters received a briefing and work assignments before heading out into the field. Briefings include a weather and fire behavior forecast, an update on night operations and the fire situation, a plan for the day’s work, a safety message, and logistical information such as where to get meals, showers, and bed down for the night. August 6th, 2026. Firefighters on the Rio Blanco Fire performed tactical firing operations to reduce the fuel load in advance of the fire front as it came down the slopes above the Lower Blanco. This tactic did not completely incinerate the vegetation around the Lower Blanco homes. On the contrary, rather than creating a moonscape, there are patches of unburned brush and trees, as well as a number of lightly scorched trees that will likely survive. People are often amazed at how quickly these lightly-burned areas bounce back. Photo courtesy of USFS.

What an amazing community we live in! The firefighters loved the signs of appreciation from the residents and businesses. Thank you from all of them working on the fire!
A huge shout out and thank you to San Juan Team 8 for setting up the smaller organization for success.

Pagosa Mountain Rotary Club

Pagosa Mountain Rotary Club is the smaller, but very active Rotary Club here in Pagosa Springs. The group helps run the Feed Our Children Program; a backpack weekend food program for local school children. They also contribute to community initiatives, youth projects, and regional non-profit efforts in Archuleta County. They meet in the evening and are always looking for new members who understand and want to be part of civic involvement.

Kenny Rogers, a Rotary member, and a Pagosa Weather board member, invited Shawn and I to share with them details about Pagosa Weather; who we are and the need for our service. We also talked about how the monsoon season was going. In addition, we shared a very first look at what we can expect this winter.

The Pagosa Mountain Rotary Club will be at the Pagosa Weather Winter Weather Wonder event, November 13th manning a wine and beer bar. All proceeds go towards their community initiatives.

I grew up in Montana where my love of the mountains is rooted. I served in the Air Force, forecasting aviation weather, for 24 years. I had eight assignments and my favorites were Colorado, Alaska, Korea, and Germany. I deployed several times, including to Iraq and Afghanistan. After RV traveling for nine years, Shawn and I found paradise in Pagosa. Here we enjoy playing outside in the spectacular San Juan mountains!
