Rest of Saturday through Thursday… Ridging will give us lots of sun and dry weather. Temps will be 5-10 degrees above average. Clouds will increase Thursday as the ridge moves to the east.

Friday and through next weekend… A low pressure system will move through the region. We’ll have more clouds, scattered showers, and slightly stronger winds. Details are still fuzzy, but here’s my initial first guess…

The 8-14 day period… A persistent ridge over the desert Southwest will keep the storm track to our north through 13 Nov.

Starting 13 Nov the ridge will weaken and move to our east. The storm track will dip farther south, and a few low-pressure systems will move through the Four Corners region. The outcomes vary considerably between a couple of wimpy storms and a couple of decent ones. Let’s hope things line up for us!

On the top, Euro ensemble precip to 23 Nov at 5am shows 1.50” in the Pagosa area. On the bottom, GFS ensemble precip shows 2.16”. The storm track will stay to our north through the 13th and then get more active. The forecast models are all over the place, so I don’t trust them. It is encouraging that amounts are trending up.

Euro ensemble 15-day snow for Wolf Creek shows 17”. Forecast models are trending up but they’re all over the place so I don’t trust them.
Note that the vertical blue bars at the end of the period indicate between 0.50” of precip and 3.5”.  That’s a huge variance!  IF we get the higher totals, Wolf Creek will be open by Thanksgiving!

I’ve been a “weather geek” since I was young child. I joined the military out of high school and was lucky to get my dream job in weather. I have 20 years of military weather experience which includes forecasting the weather all over the world. Highlights were six years in Alaska and making life and death weather decisions during deployments. I love mountains, I love snow, and I love summertime thunderstorms. I spend a bunch of time playing outdoors and found my paradise in Pagosa Springs. I do Pagosa Weather as a community service. Hopefully you find us helpful!
