Forecast discussion…

Water vapor satellite Friday morning – The high is just to our south.  Upper-level flow from the west, white arrows, is pushing dry air into the Four Corners region. There is a narrow band of monsoon moisture, green arrows, circulating around the low. Over the next few days, the high will move a little east, upper-level flow will become more out of the south, and moisture will slowly increase in our area.

Forecast highlights…

*** Dry and warm Friday. ***

*** Starting Saturday, isolated afternoon storms are possible, but it will stay warm. ***

Rest of Friday through Thursday… The monsoon moisture plume has been cut off.  Precipitable water and instability bottom out Friday and then will be marginal for the rest of this period.

This means that Friday will be dry.  The rest of the period there is a chance for a few isolated afternoon storms. I don’t expect much precip.

Temps will be 5-10 degrees above average.

Winds… Afternoon peaks will be 15-20mph.

Temps… Highs will be in the low to high 80s and lows will be in the low 40s to low 50s.

NBM precip for this period shows 0.04” precip for Pagosa and up to 0.10” along the mountains. Precip will be spotty and amounts will be low during this period.

The 8-14 day period… The high will wobble around the Four Corners area. Initially monsoon moisture and instability will be marginal leading to hit and miss storms each afternoon. The last few days of this period monsoon moisture and instability will increase resulting in an increase of storm activity.

Initially temps will be slightly above average and then be near average for the last few days of this period.

The Euro ensemble precip to 30 Aug at 6pm on the left expects 0.55” in the Pagosa area while GFS on the right expects 0.93”. Most of this is expected the last 5 days or so of this period. It’s all convective afternoon showery precip so amounts will vary considerably.

I’ve been a “weather geek” since I was young child. I joined the military out of high school and was lucky to get my dream job in weather. I have 20 years of military weather experience which includes forecasting the weather all over the world. Highlights were six years in Alaska and making life and death weather decisions during deployments. I love mountains, I love snow, and I love summertime thunderstorms. I spend a bunch of time playing outdoors and found my paradise in Pagosa Springs. I do Pagosa Weather as a community service. Hopefully you find us helpful!
