Pagosa Springs 4th of July Parade

110 4 Jul 2024

Huge thanks from Arleen & Shawn to our Pagosa Weather parade team (L to R): Bryan, Rob, Todd, Jane, Melinda, Kate, Greg, Robert, Stephen, Heather & little Liam & Abby. And of course our mascot, Tommy!

The highlight of 4th of July Festivities in Pagosa Springs is the parade! The Pagosa Weather Team joined the parade for the 3rd year! This year we handed out stress snowflakes.

Huge thanks to all our followers who called us out at the parade and showed their love for Pagosa Weather. We are so grateful to each of you.

Pagosa Springs Photography Club

Arleen and Shawn made a presentation at the July Pagosa Springs Photography Club meeting. Arleen talked about how to figure the golden hours near sunrise and sunset, and also moon rise, and moon set. In addition she talked about how to identify some of her favorite clouds and how they form. Finally, she will give a quick overview of the monsoon. It was a different and fun presentation.

Huge thanks to Andy and the rest of the club for the invitation.

Durango Radar UPDATE

We received an update from the LaPlata Public & Governmental Affairs Manager on the Durango Doppler radar at the LaPlata County Airport. The Durango Doppler radar at the LaPlata County Airport is still scheduled to be online in August. We’ll update you as we see any news.

Assembly of the radar began the week of July 15th. Arleen paid a visit to the site last week and got a few pictures. Since then the radar dome has been placed up on top of the pedestal. “The golf ball is on the tee”.

The community will have access to the data via the app and a widget on the La Plata County website. Beyond that, direct access to the data requires paid logins and there may be opportunities in the future to explore providing access to entities outside of the County and NOAA. They’ll have more details on access once the tower is up and looking around.

Our hope is that the data is at least integrated with the other NOAA radar sites on NWS’s radar page, MRMS. As soon as we have definitive information, we will update you.

CoCoRaHS Newsletter Updates

Pagosa Weather is the Archuleta County “CoCoRaHS Coordinator” and “Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador”.

Weather Data Lovers, CoCoRaHS has released CoCoRaHS Data Explorer, or “DEx” for short.  This tool provides countless new ways to visualize and analyze data.  Note: it is highly recommended to use larger screens when viewing the DEx.
Click here to go to the DEx Station Search page for data access to any station in the database. (open to the public)

HELP! Do you or do you have a friend that lives in one of the five areas highlighted below?

Archuleta County is well represented but we still have BIG data gaps. We really need a volunteer in Arboles, Dulce, west on Highway 160, Pagosa Junction, and the upper Blanco. Sign up by filling out this web page: https://www.cocorahs.org/application.aspx. Or send us a note and we can send you more detailed information.

Perhaps, our September Newsletter will show fewer red circles!

CoCoRaHS Map

The red circles are areas we could use a CoCoRaHS observer. Let us know if you can give us 5 to 10 minutes every morning to measure precip and snow. CoCoRaHS provides all the training you need.

Shawn’s July 2024 summary will be out in the next few days. He’s waiting on more DATA!

I grew up in Montana where my love of the mountains is rooted. I served in the Air Force, forecasting aviation weather, for 24 years. I had eight assignments and my favorites were Colorado, Alaska, Korea, and Germany. I deployed several times, including to Iraq and Afghanistan. After RV traveling for nine years, Shawn and I found paradise in Pagosa. Here we enjoy playing outside in the spectacular San Juan mountains!
