Community Outreach

San Juan National Forest Service, Columbine Fire District

The National Forest folks are already thinking about fire season. The fire behavior triangle is made up of fuel, topography and WEATHER!

We have been working with Clayton Rizz, a Columbine District Fuels Crew Captain, since last summer. We’ve been passing on some of our mountain weather forecasting knowledge. He has been so pleased with the training, he wanted us to pass on some of our expertise to other members of the Columbine Ranger District Fire crews.

We visited the Fire Management folks this month. It was a very attentive audience who had some great questions that resulted in exchange of information and thorough discussions.

We appreciate the incredible work and the service that these fire crews provide. It is gratifying to play a small role in helping the Forest Service crews keep the rest of us safe!

We’ll return a few more times this spring to the Columbine District for weather training with the regular fire crews and the fire crew trainees.

Safe and Sound; A Search & Rescue Documentary!

Wednesday April 3rd, Doors Open at 5PM, Movie Starts at 6PM at the Liberty Theatre. Sponsored by Pagosa Springs Medical Center and Ski & Bow Rack!

100% of Ticket Sales goes to our Upper San Juan Search & Rescue!!!

Last I heard there are just a few tickets left! $15 per ticket. Buy Online: www.pagosamovies.com

SAFE AND FOUND is an educational documentary featuring the Haywood County Search and Rescue Team. You will see what it’s like to work on a Search and Rescue Team in one of the most remote areas of Western North Carolina and The Great Smoky Mountains National Park. In addition to learning about hiker safety from a Search and Rescue perspective, you will also hear accounts from those who have been rescued, and from a daughter who lost her Mother.

The goal for creating SAFE & FOUND is to put the spotlight on hiker safety education.

Sheriff Mike Le Roux will be the guest speaker. In addition, there will be GIVEAWAYS!

Huge thanks to Pagosa Weather’s Snowman sponsor Pagosa Springs Medical Center and our Blizzard sponsor Ski & Bow Rack for bringing such a pertinent event to our mountain community filled with folks who enjoy getting into our back country.

San Juan Water Conservancy District Educational Video Series

Shawn and I will be working with Christi Bode from Moxiecran Media this month. Christi is a local video producer specializing in water & natural resources education, particularly in the form of visual storytelling. She recently produced a film on the Plumtaw Fire and wrote & produced a piece for Rocky Mountain PBS on water hauling in Aspen Springs.

Christi is currently working with the San Juan Water Conservancy District on an educational video series about water in the Upper San Juan Basin – a topic that impacts us all. She wants to communicate this in a relatable, personable way to people that live, work, play and visit the area.

She will be interviewing Shawn and I for the first video she is producing that is focused on snowpack and water supply. The 4-6 minute video will provide a 30,000 foot view of the Upper San Juan Watershed, with the focus on its ecological functions.

We are excited to be part of this project.

Below is a clip that Christi filmed at the Wolf Creek SNOTEL earlier this month:

Snow survey with NRCS at the Wolf Creek SNOTEL on March 18th, 2024. Brian, NRCS snow surveyor, speaks to the current conditions and future expectations.

CoCoRaHS Newsletter Updates

Pagosa Weather is the Archuleta County “CoCoRaHS Coordinator” and “Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador”.

Weather Data Lovers, CoCoRaHS has released CoCoRaHS Data Explorer, or “DEx” for short.  This tool provides countless new ways to visualize and analyze data.  Note: it is highly recommended to use larger screens when viewing the DEx.
Click here to go to the DEx Station Search page for data access to any station in the database. (open to the public)

HELP! Do you or do you have a friend that lives in one of the five areas highlighted below?

Archuleta County is well represented but we still have BIG data gaps. We really need a volunteer in Arboles, Dulce, west on Highway 160, Pagosa Junction, and the upper Blanco. Sign up by filling out this web page: https://www.cocorahs.org/application.aspx. Or send us a note and we can send you more detailed information.

Perhaps, our April Newsletter will show fewer red circles!

CoCoRaHS Map

The red circles are areas we could use a CoCoRaHS observer. Let us know if you can give us 5 to 10 minutes every morning to measure precip and snow. CoCoRaHS provides all the training you need.

Shawn’s March 2024 summary will be out in the next few days. He’s waiting on more DATA!

I grew up in Montana where my love of the mountains is rooted. I was in the Air Force, forecasting aviation weather, for 24 years. I had eight assignments and my favorites were Colorado, Alaska, Korea, and Germany. I deployed a number of times including to Iraq and Afghanistan. After RV traveling for nine years, we found paradise in Pagosa. Here we enjoy playing outside in the spectacular San Juan mountains!
