Winterfest was January 16th – 18th, 2026!

First, Shawn and I provided aviation weather support to the balloon pilots doing the early morning mass ascension flights. Unfortunately, the winds just above the inversion were too high Saturday morning for the balloons to launch. Sunday morning, on the other hand, was a perfect morning!

16th Annual Penguin Plunge! On Saturday at the Visitors Center about 10 teams of hearty souls jumped into the freezing cold San Juan River to support their favorite non-profits by raising money from generous sponsor and individuals.

Arleen of Pagosa Weather took the plunge for the Humane Society. Shawn was there, too, walking Humane Society pup, George around to meet everyone. Huge thanks to everyone who made donations in support of Arleen and the Humane Society.

Pagosa Weather Board

Pagosa Weather held their Annual Board Meeting this week. It was Connie Hayes’ last meeting. Connie has been a board member and an advisor for Pagosa Weather for six years. We are deeply grateful to her for her assistance over that time.

The 2026 Pagosa Weather board members are: President – Arleen Prochazk; Vice President – Udgar Parsons; Secretary – Deborah McLain; Treasurer – Jane Weitzel; Member at Large – Debbie McAlister; and new member Member at Large – Kenny Rogers. Thank you all for your advise and dedication of time.

Pagosa Weather will continue to support the community as we have in the past with weather posts on Facebook and the website. See the January newsletter for the list of community support activities we are involved in last year. We will do all that again this year. We’ll be at the 4th of July Colorado 150 year celebration with a booth with displays on the history of weather. We will have another Winter Weather Wonder event. And we may write a children’s weather book this year.

Again, huge thanks to everyone who supports us!

CoCoRaHS Newsletter Updates

Pagosa Weather is the Archuleta County “CoCoRaHS Coordinator” and “Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador”.

HELP! Do you or do you have a friend that lives in one of the six areas highlighted below?

Archuleta County is well represented but we still have BIG data gaps. We really need a volunteer in southern Hinsdale County, west Highway 160, Arboles, Pagosa Junction, Dulce, and Upper Blanco. Sign up by filling out this web page: https://www.cocorahs.org/application.aspx. Or send us a note and we can send you more detailed information.

Perhaps, our March 2026 Newsletter will show fewer red circles!

Weather Data Lovers, CoCoRaHS has released CoCoRaHS Data Explorer, or “DEx” for short.  This tool provides countless new ways to visualize and analyze data.  Note: it is highly recommended to use larger screens when viewing the DEx.
Click here to go to the DEx Station Search page for data access to any station in the database. (open to the public)

CoCoRaHS Map Recruit 28 Mar 2025

The red circles are areas we could use a CoCoRaHS observer. Let us know if you can give us 5 to 10 minutes every morning to measure precip and snow. CoCoRaHS provides all the training you need.

Note: We have an observer now in southern Mineral County.

Wolf Creek Seasonal Snowfall Weather Contest!

Forecast the total seasonal snowfall for Wolf Creek Ski Area on their final day of operations in 2026. The person with the closest guess wins a $50 gift certificate from SKI & BOW RACK!!! In addition, Ski & Bow Rack has offered HATS for the next closest guesses!

The ski area has had just 94″ of snow as of February 1st, 2026. According to the records I have from Wolf Creek Ski Resort, the worst year was 1976/1977 with a total of 187″. February and March of ’77 had 85″. The resort stayed open through at least 1/2 of April and picked up another 48″. It was an El Nino winter. Weather is weird.

2014/2015 was another El Nino year and the second worst on record. Wolf Creek picked up 140″ between February and March. 2017/2018, a La Nina winter was the 3rd worst. We had a 101″ February!

Huge thanks to Brittany & Robert and the rest of the team at Ski & Bow Rack for the support of our weather contests and for being our Blizzard level sponsor!

*The ski resort average is 360”.  Their final day of normal operation is expected to be in early April 2026.*

Good luck to everyone!

I grew up in Montana where my love of the mountains is rooted. I served in the Air Force, forecasting aviation weather, for 24 years. I had eight assignments and my favorites were Colorado, Alaska, Korea, and Germany. I deployed several times, including to Iraq and Afghanistan. After RV traveling for nine years, Shawn and I found paradise in Pagosa. Here we enjoy playing outside in the spectacular San Juan mountains!
