Young Eagles Event – September 6th/7th
Shawn and Arleen were up early Saturday and Sunday morning to brief the aviation weather to all the pilots that were part of the Young Eagles Event. Briefing pilots takes us back to our roots as aviation weather forecasters in the Air Force. We briefed pilots for a variety of air frames from helicopters to bombers to fighters.
The Young Eagles have a great program that is an annual event offering Free Plane rides for kids, ages 8-17. Such an experience can have a real impact on a young person.

Colorfest
ColorFest weekend was September 19th-21st this year with hot air balloons, a food & wine festival, live music, food trucks, craft beer, and more! This year there were 31 balloons that filled the skies downtown on Saturday morning and uptown on Sunday morning.
Arleen & Shawn were up early each morning to brief the balloon pilots that come from all over the country to be part of the Pagosa Springs event. This year Arleen went up with Austin in one of his Rocky Mountain Balloon Adventure balloons. The best way to truly understand the weather and the winds, is to fly in it!

CoCoRaHS Newsletter Updates
The snow measurement training for CoCoRaHS observers will be Wednesday, October 8th at 5:30pm at the CSU Archuleta County Extension office Hall. Do you live in a data gap area and have considered joining CoCoRaHS? Come join us for the training. We’ll start with a pot luck meal. It would be a perfect time to ask questions of other CoCoRaHS observers and learn form their experiences. Send an email to Arleen at pagosaweather@gmail.com.
Pagosa Weather is the Archuleta County “CoCoRaHS Coordinator” and “Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador”.
HELP! Do you or do you have a friend that lives in one of the six areas highlighted below?
Archuleta County is well represented but we still have BIG data gaps. We really need a volunteer in southern Hinsdale County, west Highway 160, Arboles, Pagosa Junction, Dulce, and Upper Blanco. Sign up by filling out this web page: https://www.cocorahs.org/application.aspx. Or send us a note and we can send you more detailed information.
Perhaps, our November Newsletter will show fewer red circles!
Weather Data Lovers, CoCoRaHS has released CoCoRaHS Data Explorer, or “DEx” for short. This tool provides countless new ways to visualize and analyze data. Note: it is highly recommended to use larger screens when viewing the DEx.
Click here to go to the DEx Station Search page for data access to any station in the database. (open to the public)

The red circles are areas we could use a CoCoRaHS observer. Let us know if you can give us 5 to 10 minutes every morning to measure precip and snow. CoCoRaHS provides all the training you need.
Note: We have a part time observer in the Upper Blanco. Ricky is back for the summer & monsoon season! However, we really need a full time CoCoRaHS observer up that way to measure all those winter snows.
Pagosa Weather September SUMMARY & October Outlook
Shawn will have the September Summary and my October outlook out some time in the next few days – waiting on more data. I can tell you September was good. We have waited all year for a month like it!

Closed Contest – Monsoon!!!
Forecast the amount of measured rain that the Pagosa Springs area will receive during the monsoon season. This includes the months of July, August, and September, to the nearest 100th of an inch. The monsoon started June 24th this year so that last week of June was included.
Troy Rettig is the winner of The Springs Resort dinner for two at the Wild Finch restaurant!
Sadly, our monsoon season was almost an inch below normal. June 24th-30th: .26″ + July 1.55″ + August .98″ + September 2.58 = 5.37″. Troy had a guess of 5.33. Our average monsoon season is 6.25”.
The Springs Resort is also Pagosa Weather’s Storm Sponsor and are there with us through blizzards and significant monsoon storms. We are deeply grateful for their support!

Active Contest – First Inch of Snow Weather Contest!
Forecast the date and time of the first inch of snow that falls and sticks to the ground. The Pagosa Weather Team will determine and verify the 1st inch of snow. The verification snowboard is seven miles northwest of Pagosa. A winner will be declared when this snowboard has an inch of snow. Note: This contest is closed to new guesses.
The person with the closest guess wins a $50 gift certificate from Terry’s Ace Hardware!
Terry’s Ace is one of our Snowman Sponsors. It is a modern-day general store and a member of the largest retailer-owned hardware cooperative in the industry. When Ace talks about the “Most Helpful Hardware” store, Terry’s is a shining example.
We are so thankful to Grace and her entire team at Terry’s Ace Hardware for their support of Pagosa Weather!
Good luck to all!

I submitted a guess for the first inch of snow but I don’t see it on the list. What happened? November 30th at 4:00 pm
Kate, you most likely put your guess in comments of the Facebook post. We have had a terrible time with spammers and even a few people that cloned the Pagosa Weather account. It only happens with the contest posts. Our work around was to add a Formidable form. All facebook comments are deleted. You have to go to the link in the post which takes you to our website and then fill in the from at the bottom of the page. I’ll manually add you this time. Time will be 3pm. Options are only every three hours for time. – Arleen
