Community Outreach! May was a fun month! It was so good to see and meet so many of you out in the community!

Monsoon ’25 Outlook

Our Monsoon ’25 Outlook in the Southern San Juans presentation was at the Ruby Sisson Library as part of the the Lifelong Learning program. We discussed how the North American monsoon forms and how it impacts the Southern San Juan Mountains. And I presented my monsoon forecast for this summer – which looks good.

I started the talk with a quick review of our winter which generated a very interesting discussion. The only positive is that we have not had one abysmal winter followed by another abysmal winter.

Our friend and CoCoRaHS observer, Chuck was there and he video taped the presentation for us. However, we are having technical difficulties getting it uploaded to our web site. We’ll let you know when it is there for folks that we not able to join us that afternoon.

Huge thanks to Judy and the rest of the team at the library for inviting us to talk and getting the area all set up for us!

Chimney Rock

We were in invited to speak at the Chimney Rock Interpretive Association’s Volunteer (CRIA) Orientation. It was a great opportunity to speak about thunderstorm safety with a fairly large group of CRIA volunteers. Chimney Rock National Monument is a huge lightning rod. So we talked about the thunderstorm life cycle and how to estimate thunderstorm movement. And of course we talked about lightning safety.

Huge thanks to Lace for the invitation to speak with the association. We received great feedback from the Chimney Rock Association on how useful the information we shared was for the volunteers.

“You were truly a delight: Informative and entertaining! Thanks for making us safe at “the rock” this year!”

We look forward to speaking with them every year in helping them with the great work they are doing!

San Juan USFS Pagosa District Field Training

Shawn and I got outside with the San Juan USFS Pagosa District, Fire crews for their field training day at the end of May. Some of the fire fighters were deployed to Michigan. Some of them were working the Freeman Fire. We so appreciate the hard work of these dedicated crews.

This field training was unique to our normal talks supported by pretty slide shows. I talked about clouds and thunderstorm lifecycle. A field of pretty cumulus to the north helped out by growing vertically throughout the presentation to towering cumulus. Later that day they had grown to isolated thunderstorms and sported a few lightning strikes.

I talked about how local winds form and how they affect the fire. I also talked about the different sorts of inversions and fronts and how it all interacts with and impacts wildfires.

We hope the crews found the information helpful in their mission. Training the fire crews is a priority for the Pagosa Weather Team. Huge thanks to Tracy Milakovic, the Pagosa District Fire Management Officer for the invitation to be part of the training week.

CoCoRaHS Newsletter Updates

Pagosa Weather is the Archuleta County “CoCoRaHS Coordinator” and “Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador”.

HELP! Do you or do you have a friend that lives in one of the six areas highlighted below?

Archuleta County is well represented but we still have BIG data gaps. We really need a volunteer in southern Hinsdale County, west Highway 160, Arboles, Pagosa Junction, Dulce, and Upper Blanco. Sign up by filling out this web page: https://www.cocorahs.org/application.aspx. Or send us a note and we can send you more detailed information.

Perhaps, our July Newsletter will show fewer red circles!

Weather Data Lovers, CoCoRaHS has released CoCoRaHS Data Explorer, or “DEx” for short.  This tool provides countless new ways to visualize and analyze data.  Note: it is highly recommended to use larger screens when viewing the DEx.
Click here to go to the DEx Station Search page for data access to any station in the database. (open to the public)

CoCoRaHS Map Recruit 28 Mar 2025

The red circles are areas we could use a CoCoRaHS observer. Let us know if you can give us 5 to 10 minutes every morning to measure precip and snow. CoCoRaHS provides all the training you need.

Note: We have a part time observer in the Upper Blanco. We’re looking forward to Ricky returning for the summer & monsoon season! However, we really need a full time CoCoRaHS observer up that way.

Closed Contest – First 24″ of Snow Winter 2024/2025

Sadly, we never got up to 24″… However the winner was Kayla Cornish as determined by the Pagosa Weather Board.

The greatest snowpack depth that we had at the verification spot, 7 miles northwest of Pagosa in O’Neal Park just off of North Piedra, past the two cattle guards at 8,030 feet elevation, was 12″ at 8:00am on February 15th. Kayla Cornish was the closest with a date of February 14th at 10:00am.

The Pagosa Weather board has made the decision to award Kayla Cornish with the closest guess to the greatest amount of snowpack depth date/time with the $100 gift certificate to Alley House.

Huge “Thanks” to Joni, Martin, Landon, Alisa and the entire team at Alley House for their support and sponsoring this contest!

Active Contest – Monsoon!!!

Forecast the amount of measured rain that the Pagosa Springs area will receive during the monsoon season. This includes the months of July, August, and September, to the nearest 100th of an inch. If the monsoon starts earlier in June, Arleen and Shawn will determine the exact date that the monsoon set up and include that data from those dates. Note: this contest is closed to any new guesses.

The winner receives dinner for 2 at the Wild Finch restaurant from The Springs Resort!

The Springs Resort is also Pagosa Weather’s Storm Sponsor and are there with us through blizzards and significant monsoon storms. We are deeply grateful for their support!

Good Luck to everyone!

I grew up in Montana where my love of the mountains is rooted. I served in the Air Force, forecasting aviation weather, for 24 years. I had eight assignments and my favorites were Colorado, Alaska, Korea, and Germany. I deployed several times, including to Iraq and Afghanistan. After RV traveling for nine years, Shawn and I found paradise in Pagosa. Here we enjoy playing outside in the spectacular San Juan mountains!
