Community Outreach!

May was another busy month! It was so wonderful to meet so many Pagosa Weather followers.

Multi Agency Coordination meeting – 13 May 26

Sheriff Mike Le Roux called us with concerns for potential LPEA Public Safety Power Shutoffs. I prepared a brief for the Multi Agency Coordination meeting that included historical Red Flag Warning information and the outlook for the rest of the summer. LPEA was also at the brief.

“A Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) is a wildfire mitigation tool that is used by utility companies to limit the risk of wildfire ignition due to downed equipment or debris. This is a common mitigation practice used during hot, dry, and windy conditions when fire risk is high. The intention behind a PSPS is to keep our communities safe.”

They are encouraging everyone to sign up for outage updates: LPEA Outage Reports and Updates

San Juan National Forest, Pagosa District Fire Training

Shawn and I visited the San Juan USFS Pagosa District for part of their 2026 Pagosa District Training Week! We reviewed and introduced a number of concepts that are important to fire-crews in understanding the local climate, topography, and how weather such as the monsoon impacts their fire season. We reviewed the Red Flag program. In addition, we explained how thunderstorms form to help them better understand weather forming around them in the field.

We hope the crews found the information helpful in their mission. Huge thanks to Tracy Milakovic, the Pagosa District Fire Management Officer, Brian, and Cody for the invitation to be part of the training week.

USFS Pagosa

San Juan National Forest, Columbine District Fire Training

Shawn and I visited the Wild Land fire crews in Bayfield to help with refresher training. They consider weather the most important part of the training that they do in conjunction with fuels and topography training. Weather is the most dynamic element and subject to the quickest change. They are always so appreciative of our visits and the information that we share with them.

Shawn and I really value the important, difficult work the fire crews perform. Training the fire crews is a priority for the Pagosa Weather Team. We know the crews find the information helpful in their mission.

It is always an honor to visit the Rotary Club and share information with them. They do so many wonderful things for our community. We know so many of them and it is wonderful to catch up with them.

We briefed them on our local climatology and what to expect for the rest of the year.

We’ll be attending Pagosa’s other Rotary Club meeting in August.

I grew up in Montana where my love of the mountains is rooted. I served in the Air Force, forecasting aviation weather, for 24 years. I had eight assignments and my favorites were Colorado, Alaska, Korea, and Germany. I deployed several times, including to Iraq and Afghanistan. After RV traveling for nine years, Shawn and I found paradise in Pagosa. Here we enjoy playing outside in the spectacular San Juan mountains!
