Forecast discussion…

Satellite on Saturday afternoon – The red arrows indicate the jet stream. An “atmospheric river” is taking aim at the Pacific Northwest.  Unfortunately for us, the ridge, jagged blue line, will prevent most of the moisture from reaching us.

These are ensemble precip forecast products to 5am on 14 Jan. In the upper left the Euro shows 0.15”. In the upper right the Euro AI shows 0.20”. In the bottom left the GFS ensemble shows 0.17”. In the bottom right the Canadian ensemble shows 0.17”. Notes: The models agree that upper-level flow will be mostly out the west and northwest. This does not favor us. The models are also surprisingly consistent with precip amounts. Sadly those amounts are considerably below average for this time of year.

I’ve been a “weather geek” since I was young child. I joined the military out of high school and was lucky to get my dream job in weather. I have 20 years of military weather experience which includes forecasting the weather all over the world. Highlights were six years in Alaska and making life and death weather decisions during deployments. I love mountains, I love snow, and I love summertime thunderstorms. I spend a bunch of time playing outdoors and found my paradise in Pagosa Springs. I do Pagosa Weather as a community service. Hopefully you find us helpful!
