Community Outreach!

Emergency Preparedness Workshop

Colorado State University, Archuleta County Extension in conjunction with Archuleta County Public Health Department conducted a workshop on Emergency preparedness on July 15th at the CSU Extension Building.

Your Pagosa Weather Team was there to discuss our weather and climate as well as latest update on the monsoon.

Other speakers included Cindi Galabota from the CSU County Extension office, Lacy Capre from the Archuleta County Public Health Department, Robin Young from CSU, and Roy Vega from the Archuleta Conty Sheriff’s office. Topics covered included Safety Precautions, Health of our Land, How to prepare for Emergencies, Evacuation protocol, Recovery after Emergencies, and Financial Resources.

This event was Free & Open to the Public. CSU is discussing holding two free “Be Prepared for an Emergency” workshops every year. One to prepare for winter emergencies and one to prepare for summer emergencies.

This workshop was recorded. I’ll post it for everyone when it is made available.

Chimney Rock Youth Workshop

Chimney Rock hosted a Youth Workshop at the beginning of July. This workshop was focused on nature journaling. Arleen talked about cloud identification, how to estimate winds speeds and other weather elements.

They all went on a nature hike together. They were able to monitor small cumulus clouds mature into rainshowers throughout the morning.

It is a great program to learn more about the natural world around us.

CoCoRaHS Newsletter Updates

Pagosa Weather is the Archuleta County “CoCoRaHS Coordinator” and “Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador”.

The snow measurement training for CoCoRaHS observers will be Wednesday, October 8th at 5:30pm at the CSU Archuleta County Extension office Hall. Do you live in a data gap area and have considered joining CoCoRaHS? Come join us for the training. We’ll start with a pot luck meal. It would be a perfect time to ask questions of other CoCoRaHS observers and learn form their experiences. Send an email to Arleen at pagosaweather@gmail.com.

HELP! Do you or do you have a friend that lives in one of the six areas highlighted below?

Archuleta County is well represented but we still have BIG data gaps. We really need a volunteer in southern Hinsdale County, west Highway 160, Arboles, Pagosa Junction, Dulce, and Upper Blanco. Sign up by filling out this web page: https://www.cocorahs.org/application.aspx. Or send us a note and we can send you more detailed information.

Perhaps, our September Newsletter will show fewer red circles!

Weather Data Lovers, CoCoRaHS has released CoCoRaHS Data Explorer, or “DEx” for short.  This tool provides countless new ways to visualize and analyze data.  Note: it is highly recommended to use larger screens when viewing the DEx.
Click here to go to the DEx Station Search page for data access to any station in the database. (open to the public)

CoCoRaHS Map Recruit 28 Mar 2025

The red circles are areas we could use a CoCoRaHS observer. Let us know if you can give us 5 to 10 minutes every morning to measure precip and snow. CoCoRaHS provides all the training you need.

Note: We have a part time observer in the Upper Blanco. Ricky is back for the summer & monsoon season! However, we really need a full time CoCoRaHS observer up that way to measure all those winter snows.

Pagosa Weather July SUMMARY & August Outlook

Shawn will have the July Summary and the August outlook out later today.

I grew up in Montana where my love of the mountains is rooted. I served in the Air Force, forecasting aviation weather, for 24 years. I had eight assignments and my favorites were Colorado, Alaska, Korea, and Germany. I deployed several times, including to Iraq and Afghanistan. After RV traveling for nine years, Shawn and I found paradise in Pagosa. Here we enjoy playing outside in the spectacular San Juan mountains!
