Fire restrictions on all National Forest System lands within the San Juan National Forest, including wilderness, will be rescinded – effective 12:01am Thursday, August 31st. Recent rains over the Forest have lessened the risk of wildland fire, allowing restrictions to be lifted. This means campfires are now allowed outside of established Forest Service campgrounds and recreation sites on the San Juan National Forest.

A low pressure off northern California will move NE over the next two days, ushering in our first cool front of the season on Monday. Rain odds will remain at almost zero.

Forecast discussion…

You know things are going wrong weatherwise, when Las Vegas gets 1-2 inches of rain and we get absolutely nothing! Such is the case as deep monsoonal moisture flowed into western Arizona, eastern southern California, Nevada and western Utah, but unfortunately stayed too far to our west for us to get some rain relief. A low pressure off northern California will move NE over the next two days, ushering in our first cool front of the season on Monday. Winds will be gusting to over 30mph, so Labor Day picnics will be quite a challenge keeping food, plates, table clothes, etc. from becoming flying objects! Behind the front, look for cooler weather through Wednesday, then a warming trend for the latter half of the week.

I consider myself a "weather journalist" who has been studying and following meteorology since taking an earth science class in eighth grade. Later, when I became a professional commercial photographer, I learned that my continued studies in meteorology helped me plan outdoor photo assignments. I'm now a semi-retired photographer who teaches photo workshops, goes storm chasing and of course enjoys photographing great landscapes and clouds in our area. My fine art photography can be seen here: https://fineartamerica.com/profiles/1-mark-langford
