Part of the Lifelong Learning Program at the Ruby Sisson Library.

Join Arleen Prochazka and Mark Langford as they talk about Monsoon Season in the southern San Juan Mountains. Arleen will explain exactly how and when the monsoon sets up in our area. In addition, she will go over the evidence that indicates whether we are going to have a weak, average, or strong monsoon season. Last year we had 9.32″ of precipitation for the monsoon season months of July, August, and September. That was well above the average of 6.25″. Will this season be another soaker?

In addition, Mark will cover lightning safety, the latest update on the southwest Doppler radar, and updates to the Pagosa Weather web page.

As always, we’ll have time to answer any of your weather questions. See you on Thursday!

San Juan Outdoor Club, May 31st

If you can’t make it on Thursday, Arleen and Shawn will be speaking at the San Juan Outdoor Club meeting on Wednesday, May 31st, at 6:30pm. In addition to discussing the outlook for this year’s monsoon season, Arleen will review this past winter season. How did we end up with so much more snow than average during a La Nina winter?

I grew up in Montana where my love of mountains is rooted. I was in the Air Force for 24 years; Weather Observer to Weather Forecaster to Staff Weather Officer all to ensure flight safety. Mission was to brief aircrews on clouds, winds, turbulence, icing, thunderstorms. I served a total of 8 assignments and 4 deployments around the world. After RV traveling full time for 9 years, we found paradise in Pagosa. Here we enjoy hiking, mountain biking, fishing, kayaking, snowshoeing, skiing in spectacular mountains! Plus, we're trying to solve the San Juan weather puzzle! I am an AMS member.
