Forecast discussion…

The upper-level low is now to our SW and moving east this morning. The low ended up tracking further south than originally forecast, so snow totals were on the lower end of what was forecast as well. Fortunately, our mountains did very well, with 32 inches of snow falling at Wolf Creek Ski area. This system will have a major impact on the weather later today and tonight, as high winds and severe storms are forecast in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisianna, Arkansas and Mississippi.

High pressure moves in and other than some light snow showers for our mountains over the next few days, look for a return to our perma-blue skies and beautiful early March weather. Our next storm is forecast to arrive late next week…the models are still sorting this one out, so I’ll wait until my next post on Saturday to make any guesses on how much snow may fall.

Shawn will post his February monthly summary this afternoon.

As of post time, the upper-level low was SW of us, tracking east. The low took a more southern route than forecast, thus less snow fell in our area…even so, the mountains still did very well!

5-Day Forecast…

Friday-Saturday: Mostly sunny with lows in the upper single digits to teens and highs in the mid to upper 30’s. SW winds 10-15 with gusts to 20mph.

I consider myself a "weather journalist" who has been studying and following meteorology since taking an earth science class in eighth grade. Later, when I became a professional commercial photographer, I learned that my continued studies in meteorology helped me plan outdoor photo assignments. I'm now a semi-retired photographer who teaches photo workshops, goes storm chasing and of course enjoys photographing great landscapes and clouds in our area.
