CoCoRaHS

Welcome to Jennifer, Mike, Linda, Leo, and Udgar as new CoCoRaHS weather observers in the last month!!! Huge thanks to these folks who will be adding their data every day to the database and help hydrologists as they make key decisions during the drought. We now have vital data from Echo Canyon, Aspen Springs, DownTown, and Catchpole Creek.

Pagosa Weather is the “CoCoRaHS Coordinator” for Archuleta County and is also a “Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador”. Archuleta County is well represented but we still have big data gaps. We really need a volunteer in Arboles, west on Highway 160, Pagosa Junction, and the upper Blanco. Sign up by filling out this web page: https://www.cocorahs.org/application.aspx. Or send us a note and we can send you more detailed information.

Pagosa Weather is conducting a snow measuring seminar/pot luck for the CoCoRaHS observers some time in October.

Snow Measuring Boards

Huge thanks to our Mike, our CoCoRaHS observer out in Aspen Springs. I gave him an idea of what we were looking for and Mike ran with it, bringing his expertise to the process. Mike has built a number of prototype snow measuring boards for our CoCoRaHS observers to test this year. If they are durable and make it through the winter well, we will be selling them next year to all of you.

Weather Ready Nation Ambassador of Excellence Award Nomination

The National Weather Service Grand Junction has nominated your Pagosa Weather Team as Weather Ready Nation (WRN) Ambassador of Excellence! “WRN Ambassador organizations that have made significant contributions to building a Weather-Ready Nation. By serving as change agents and leaders in their communities, Ambassadors of Excellence have:

  • Inspired others to take action and become ready, responsive, and resilient
  • Created innovative ways to engage their community, their workforce, and/or their social network
  • Formed unique collaborations with NOAA and/or other ambassador organizations to achieve goals they alone could not meet
  • Embraced building “a Weather-Ready Nation for All” by addressing vulnerable populations’ needs.”

We are honored to be nominated. The awards winners will be announced in September.

I grew up in Montana where my love of mountains is rooted. I was in the Air Force for 24 years; Weather Observer to Weather Forecaster to Staff Weather Officer all to ensure flight safety. Mission was to brief aircrews on clouds, winds, turbulence, icing, thunderstorms. I served a total of 8 assignments and 4 deployments around the world. After RV traveling full time for 9 years, we found paradise in Pagosa. Here we enjoy hiking, mountain biking, fishing, kayaking, snowshoeing, skiing in spectacular mountains! Plus, we're trying to solve the San Juan weather puzzle! I am an AMS member.
