It’s Official! Pagosa Weather is a nonprofit!

I received a letter from the IRS yesterday. A letter from the IRS is not normally a good thing. But in this case it was a letter stating that they had determined that we are exempt from federal income tax under IRC section 501 (c)(3)!!!   Donors can deduct contributions they make to us under IRC section 170.  We’re also qualified to receive tax deductible bequests, devices, transfers or gifts under Section 2055, 2106, or 2522.  They also determined we are a public charity as opposed to a private foundation.

We’ll start soliciting sponsors for 2022. If you are a business that is interested in sponsoring Pagosa Weather, please send me an email at

We’ll also start getting more involved with the community with weather talks. We’ll be doing a presentation on winter weather on the 1st of September at the San Juan Outdoor Club monthly meeting. If you are with an organization that would be interested in Pagosa Weather coming to talk to them, please send me an email at

Remember to pick up your Pagosa Weather Snow measuring device at San Juan Mercantile.

Again, thank you so much to everyone that has made a donation. Mark, Shawn and I have been truly touched by the support our followers have shown for us!

I grew up in Montana where my love of mountains is rooted. I was in the Air Force for 24 years; Weather Observer to Weather Forecaster to Staff Weather Officer all to ensure flight safety. Mission was to brief aircrews on clouds, winds, turbulence, icing, thunderstorms. I served a total of 8 assignments and 4 deployments around the world. After RV traveling full time for 9 years, we found paradise in Pagosa. Here we enjoy hiking, mountain biking, fishing, kayaking, snowshoeing, skiing in spectacular mountains! Plus, we're trying to solve the San Juan weather puzzle! I am an AMS member.
